A large part of this is due to the collegiate nature of the town; Amherst is home to Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The transient and bustling nature of such a community can pose unique hurdles to the personnel commissioned with maintaining peace and order.

The Amherst Police Department is a full-service agency. The Department is organized into six divisions: Administration, Animal Welfare, Public Safety Communications, Detective Bureau, Parking Management and Records Bureau. 54 men and women are proud to be employed by the Amherst Police Department.
