At an estimated population of 3,886,207 (for year 2006), Harris County is the largest county in Texas. It is also the third largest county in the nation. Houston, a major Texan city, is located within Harris County. The county spans 1,778 square miles and about 3% of it is water.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is organized within nine main bureaus: Detective, Detention, Executive Bureau, Field Operations Support, Human Resources, Patrol, Patrol Support Services, Public Services, and Support Services. There are several detailed units and teams within each bureau. The County is divided into five districts, which the Harris County Sheriff’s Office serves and patrols.
