Sacramento is the state capitol of California and the seventh most populous city in the state with an estimated 2007 population of 467,343. Sacramento has several universities in its immediate vicinity including California State University, Sacramento and University of California at Davis. The city itself is quite large at 99.2 square miles. Additionally, approximately 2% of the area is water.

In order to better serve their large community, the Sacramento Police Department is constantly employing new strategies. In 2006, the Police Department formed the Violent Crimes Reduction teams to help counter a new wave of violent crime. Additionally, the SPD has been utilizing new technology including a state-of-the-art Communications center. Sacramento Police Department also has an extensive Homeland Security unit.
