As of the 2000 census, San Angelo, Texas had a population of 88,439. Within its 58.2 square miles lies the Goodfellow Air Force Base and Mathis Field, the city’s commercial airport.

The San Angelo Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency. Within the Department are units dedicated to Patrol, Traffic, SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) & HNT (Hostage Negotiations Team), Criminal Investigation, CSI (Crime Scene Investigation), K-9 Units, Narcotics, and Support Services. The Department has 147 sworn personnel to complete these functions.
