Travis County of Texas had about 812,280 residents according to the 2000 census. However, the 2006 estimate of the county’s population is 921,006. Travis County includes Austin, one of the major cities in the state. Travis County spans 1,022 square miles, and about 3% of the area is under water.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for law enforcement and confinement of inmates. The county has three major jail facilities: Central Booking, Travis County jail, and the Travis County Correctional Complex. The law enforcement division provides patrol, investigation and special operations. These special operations include lake patrol, crime prevention, dispatch, reserves, SWAT team, and training academy. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office employs over 1000 sworn personnel and over 320 civilian employees.
