The Union City Police Department began in 1966 with twelve police officers and one secretary. Today, they have 76 police officers supported by over 40 full-time and part-time non-sworn professional staff.  They are a full service police department providing the following services and programs: Patrol, Investigations, Traffic Unit, Canine Unit, Gang Task Force, Narcotics Task Force, Community Policing, Personnel and Training, Dispatch/Records Unit, Property Unit, and Animal Control Services.  In 2005, the department responded to over 79,000 calls for service while serving a culturally diverse population of over 70,000.

The Union City Police Department utilizes the Tiburon Records Management System.
